Understanding Net Metering, Net Accounting & Net Plus in Sri Lanka: Smarter Solar, Smarter Savings

As Sri Lanka continues its journey towards a greener energy future, solar power has become a practical and increasingly popular solution for homeowners and businesses alike. To encourage this shift, the government—through the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and Lanka Electricity Company (LECO)—offers three primary grid-connected solar schemes: Net Metering, Net Accounting, and Net Plus. Each scheme is designed to promote renewable energy adoption while offering different financial models to suit varied customer needs.

🔋 What is Net Metering?

Net Metering allows you to generate your own electricity using a solar PV system and feed any excess energy back into the national grid. In return, you earn credits that offset the electricity you draw from the grid when your system isn’t producing enough (e.g., at night or on cloudy days).

How it Works:

  • Daytime: Solar panels power your home and send excess energy to the grid.
  • Nighttime / Low Sunlight: You draw electricity from the grid.
  • Billing: You only pay for the net usage (i.e., energy consumed from the grid minus what you exported).
  • Credit Carry-Forward: Excess credits can be carried forward for up to 10 years.

💰 What is Net Accounting?

Net Accounting is similar to Net Metering but uses a different compensation method. Instead of energy credits, you receive a monetary value for the excess electricity exported to the grid.

Key Points:

  • You pay your full monthly bill for grid usage.
  • You are separately paid for the energy exported to the grid, at a predetermined rate (set by the utility).
  • The payment is credited monthly to your electricity account.

🔄 What is Net Plus?

Net Plus is ideal for users who want to sell all the energy their system generates to the grid, without using it for self-consumption.

Key Features:

  • Your entire solar output is exported to the grid.
  • You are paid in cash (or credit) at the agreed feed-in tariff.
  • You still receive and pay for a separate electricity bill for your regular grid usage.
